Dr. Clement Apaak, the Member of Parliament for Builsa South, has warned that the country’s high unemployment rate poses a national security threat.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s morning show ‘Adekyee Mu Nsem’ with host Citizen Kofi Owusu, Dr. Apaak emphasized the urgent need for the government to reassess its employment generation strategies in light of a recent report by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).
The GSS report reveals that Ghana’s nearly two million young people are not in education, employment, or training (NEET). Specifically, the Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey (AHIES) shows that in the third quarter of last year, 1.9 million youth aged 15 to 35 were classified as NEET. Of these, a significant majority—1.2 million—are females, compared to 715,691 males.
Despite this troubling figure, there has been a notable improvement compared to the previous year. The NEET rate dropped by 5.9 percent, from 24.1 percent in the third quarter of 2022 to 18.2 percent in the same period last year.
Dr. Apaak urged the government to implement effective measures to combat youth unemployment, highlighting that failing could jeopardize the country’s peace and stability.
