“Dr. Frank Yao Gbadago Criticizes Curriculum Changes: Calls for Integration of STEM and Local Values”

A Tax Expert and Tutor at the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), Dr. Frank Yao Gbadago, has voiced concerns regarding recent changes in the school curriculum.

He questions the relevance of some components, emphasizing the importance of aligning educational values with local contexts rather than blindly copying Western models.

Dr. Gbadago highlighted that the curriculum should integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) along with digital literacy, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, innovation, and entrepreneurship. He stressed that quality education requires a strong foundation, without which it becomes superficial.

Speaking at the joint Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduation ceremony of Onua Francis International School and the Young Executives School in Kasoa, Central Region, Dr. Gbadago addressed the theme “Equipping the Younger Generation.”

The ceremony celebrated the graduation of 236 students from the schools established over 12 years ago, now hosting 2,019 students with boarding facilities for both girls and boys.

Dr. Gbadago also emphasized the need for education to foster community service, nationalism, and patriotism, making it relevant to society and avoiding the importation of foreign cultures that could produce individuals with no commitment to their country.

Omankrado of Gomoa Wassa, Nana Kojo Sasah Sam IV, underscored the importance of the BECE as a critical milestone for academic success.

He believes that, BECE is a pivotal moment filled with anticipation and opportunities, urging parents to support and believe in their children during this crucial transition.

Nana Sam IV reminded the students of their role in carrying the hopes and aspirations of their families and communities.

He emphasized that quality education requires hard work, focus, and dedication, which must be instilled in the graduates as they advance to higher academic levels.

He further encouraged students to make the right choices and maximize the educational opportunities provided through their parents’ sacrifices.

According to him, education is the key to leveling the playing field with the affluent, and only a trained mind can creatively and intelligently address societal challenges.

Chief Executive Officer of Onua Francis International School and the Young Executives School, Noble Francis Essel-Okyeahene, highlighted the school’s commitment to holistic education.

The school offers various extracurricular activities, including a cadet program, Tae-Kwan-Do, and robotics club.

Mr. Essel-Okyeahene also noted the school’s dedication to social responsibilities, including the provision of dual desks to deprived public schools, donating a vehicle to the Kasoa Fire Service, offering scholarships to needy students, and contributing to National Farmers Day celebrations.
