In a democratic system, the roles of the president and vice president are crucial for leading the nation, upholding democratic values, and serving the interests of citizens. While the president wields ultimate executive authority, the vice president provides vital support and assumes significant responsibilities, ensuring continuity and effective governance.
Recently, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, a Senior Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, conducted a comparative analysis between the running mates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, and the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (popularly known as “NAPO”). Highlighting their performances as former Education Ministers and their political experience, Dr. Asah-Asante noted that Dr. Prempeh is widely preferred among party members according to a survey by the National Investigation Bureau (NIB).
Dr. Asah-Asante emphasized that both candidates excel in their respective roles, with Prof. Jane Naana distinguished for her extensive experience in the education sector, rising from lecturer to professor. He acknowledged Dr. Prempeh’s parliamentary background and noted his popularity within the country. Comparing their strengths, he remarked, “If Jane Naana is at Bolga, Napo is at Tamale.”
Regarding the qualities expected of a running mate, Dr. Asah-Asante evaluated them under various criteria such as experience, competence, complementary skills, political savvy, integrity, communication skills, teamwork, leadership qualities, strategic thinking, diversity, and public appeal. These qualities are pivotal in enhancing the overall ticket’s appeal and electability.
Today, July 9, 2024, the New Patriotic Party officially introduced Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate to their flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for the upcoming general elections. The announcement, held at Kumasi Jubilee.
