The Chief of Tarkoratwene, also known as Maame Krobo Junction, in the Afram Plains South District, Nana Asiedu Baah II, has ordered Fulani herdsmen operating in the area to vacate the community with immediate effect following persistent complaints of crop destruction by their cattle.
The directive follows repeated reports from farmers who say their farmlands have been continuously invaded by roaming cattle, resulting in extensive damage to crops including maize, cassava, plantain, and various vegetables.
Addressing the issue, Nana Asiedu Baah II said the ongoing destruction has heightened tensions between farmers and herdsmen and now poses a serious threat to peace and security in the community. He noted that despite several warnings and engagements with the herdsmen, the situation has not improved.
In view of this, the chief said the decision to order the herdsmen to leave was necessary to prevent violent clashes and to protect the livelihoods of local farmers. He emphasized that the safety of residents and the preservation of their means of livelihood remain a top priority for traditional authorities.
The chief also appealed to residents to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring them that the traditional leadership will continue to collaborate with security agencies to ensure peace and order in Tarkoratwene.
Some affected farmers further alleged that the cattle have not only destroyed farmlands but have also damaged graves at the community cemetery. They welcomed the chief’s decision, describing it as a timely intervention to save their farms and sources of income. The farmers have called on district security agencies and the local assembly to support and enforce the directive to ensure lasting peace.
