Why Worry Our Children If There’s No Money For BECE? – Prof Osafo To Gov’t

Head of Psychology at the University of Ghana, Professor Joseph Osafo has kicked against Ghanaian students writing BECE.

According to him, the formative years of a child should not be academically competitive to the extent of subjecting them to writing exams.

He argued that, to him, it is proper for the students to be assessed by their class works and tests but the BECE must be scrapped.

Professor Joseph Osafo said this in relation to fears that this year’s Basic Education Certificate Exams (BECE) may not come on due to government’s indebtedness to the examining body, WAEC.

WAEC expects government to pay over 90 million cedis to conduct the exams.

According to reports, WAEC has received only GH¢2.3 million out of GH¢95.83 million which, to them, is not enough to organize the exams scheduled to begin on Monday, July 8 to July 15.

The examining body is demanding at least 50 percent payment of the total amount to commence the exams.

To Prof. Osafo, why should we worry these children?
He stressed in a media interview  that if the government cannot pay the debt, they should consider his suggestion that students at the basic level should not write BECE but rather be given the chance to advance to the secondary/technical institution for their future sake.
