On Friday, June 14th, 2024, Ing. David Osafo Adonteng, the Executive Director of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), stated that Ghana experiences around 2,000 deaths each year due to road accidents.
He explained that preliminary investigations by the NRSA have identified non-compliance with road traffic regulations as the primary cause of these accidents, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries.
During an interview on Ahotor FM‘s morning show ‘Adekyee Mu Nsem‘ with host Citizen Kofi Owusu, Ing. Adonteng highlighted the broader impact of these accidents. He noted that the effects extend beyond the victims to their spouses, children, and families, who suffer significant social and economic consequences.
To address the rising number of road accidents, the NRSA has partnered with the Ghana Police Service to increase awareness and education among drivers and road users. Ing. Adonteng urged drivers to adhere to road safety regulations to prevent accidents that can lead to fatalities and property damage.
He also emphasized the NRSA’s commitment to public education on road safety. The Authority, along with the media, the Ghana Police Service, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, and other stakeholders, is determined to reduce road accidents through continuous collaboration and public sensitization efforts.
Ing. Adonteng stressed that traffic accidents negatively affect the country’s socioeconomic progress and called on all road users to support the road safety initiative for the benefit of everyone.
