Tema-Mpakadan Train Accident to Cost the State $2.1 Million In Damages – Prosecutors

State Prosecutors have informed an Accra High Court that repairing the modern train, which crashed a few months ago during a test drive on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line, will cost the country $2,138,466.86.

Four individuals are currently facing charges for allegedly colluding with the driver of the stationary truck that caused the crash. They were arrested and remanded two months ago.

The accident, which occurred on April 18, resulted in minor damages to the driver’s section of the train, according to authorities at the Railway Ministry. During a court hearing on Thursday, June 6, prosecutors urged the judge to remand the accused persons to the Nsawam Prison and filed a new charge sheet, replacing the earlier charges.

Kokuo Koudjo, Patrick Kwaku Sosu, Alaza Prosper, and Fiadugbe Emmanuel were initially charged with abetting the unlawful damage of the new train.

The new charge sheet now includes four counts: using a railway line in breach of the Railway Act, aiding in endangering persons in the train, unlawfully placing stones on the railway line contrary to the Railway Act, and causing unlawful damage.

The accused pleaded not guilty and were granted bail of GHC 200 each.

The case was adjourned to June 27.

The driver of the truck, who was the first to be arrested, was jailed for six months the day after the incident.
