The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has intensified its effort to get persons with disabilities out to vote in this year’s presidential and parliamentary elections.
It has been organizing education forums to assist them to have better understanding of the electoral laws and to take them through the voting process.
Mr. Alhassan Yakubu, the Ashanti Regional Director, said their goal was to make sure that no qualified voter was disfranchised.
Addressing a day’s workshop for physically challenged students in Kumasi, he reminded them that voting was a civic responsibility that needed to be taken seriously.
The progamme was jointly organized by the NCCE and the Millennium Child Support Group, an NGO, with support from STAR-Ghana, a multi-pool funding mechanism.
On hand to participate, were representatives of three political parties – the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).
Mr. Yakubu advised the students to abide by the electoral laws to avoid getting themselves into trouble.
The students called for the Electoral Commission (EC) to go the extra mile to ensure that the December 07 polls was free, fair and credible.
Ms. Ernestina Yeboah, their leader, asked that all key actors demonstrated good faith and worked together to remove suspicion, needless political tension and confusion.
