Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader, highlighted how the Minority in Parliament played a crucial role in conserving $150 million for Ghana. This was achieved by scrutinizing the government’s proposed tax waivers for 42 companies participating in the One-District-One-Factory initiative. By challenging certain assessments, they successfully reduced the initial tax exemptions from $459 million to $335 million.
Addressing the Parliament, Dr. Forson emphasized that among the 42 companies seeking tax relief, the government was seeking exemptions totaling US$449,446,247.95, equivalent to over 5.5 billion Ghana cedis. He specifically mentioned concerns over an overvalued assessment of an oil refinery among the projects.
Dr. Forson clarified that while they support the concept of tax exemptions, their reservations lie with specific exemptions granted under the 1D1F initiative.
