The Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has come under barrage of criticism for some of his utterances especially since he started his campaign to win the presidency, come December 7, 2024.
Some have chided him as immature and not prune for the position he is vying for.
Dr Bawumia said he disagrees with calls from certain quarters calling for the churches to be taxed.
Some have argued that the church is now run as a business and therefore needs to be taxed just like any other business.
Speaking to some clergy as part of his nationwide tour, Dr Bawumia kicked against those calls insisting that govt must rather provide incentives for the church.
He justified his position by the number of educational institutions, hospitals, and other infrastructure the church has provided.
He added that, upon assumption of the Presidential seat, he intends to partner the churches and other faiths as domestic partners.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia later retracted his steps by saying was joking about incentivizing churches in response to people who misunderstood his comments.
Bawumia’s quip came after he pledged to incentivize churches to undertake development projects in an engagement on May 10, 2024, in the Bono East Region.
In a meeting with the clergy in the North East Region, Bawumia explained that his joke was to underscore the historical contribution of the church.
During an interview on Ahotor 92.3fm midday news, Risk, Resiliency Expert & Governance Analyst, David Zekpah said, the NPP flagbearer, Dr Bawumia is having a very difficult campaign based on his utterances.
Mr Zekpah noted that, the utterances of Dr Bawumia are infantile and a blow to himself.
“This whole election we are going, some of us have been very strong on the fact that, Dr Bawumia shouldn’t even be going for the election at all. He shouldn’t have put himself up for the election because it’s going to be more difficult”, he said
“I think he is not doing good because he was too elaborate, he mentioned our development partners abroad as compared to our development partners in Ghana being the churches and to come back and say, hey, it was only a joke. I don’t think it speaks well for himself, the campaign and the everything he stands for. Mr. Zekpah noted.
Mr Zekpah raised concerns of the level of partisanship in the country to the extent that, we are unable to tell truth to issues, but for the Vice president to speak and later say he is lying, is so unfortunate.
He said the govt has engaged in exaggeration but the reality stares everyone in the face.
One of the hallmarks of this govt is lying and spewing out conflicting data which does not tally with the situation on the grounds.
