The highly anticipated limited voter registration, set to kick off today, Tuesday, May 7, has encountered obstacles in five crucial districts nationwide. Despite the planned rollout, not a single individual has been successfully registered in the Central Region, Greater Accra Region, Oti Region, The Bunsu enclave, and Central Region, according to our reporters’ updates.
Reports from our regional correspondents suggest that registration delays extend beyond these districts, signaling a widespread issue that threatens to disrupt the registration process on a national scale. This setback deals a significant blow to the Electoral Commission’s efforts to ensure a smooth and effective registration, aiming to enroll around 623,000 first-time voters across the country.
Amid these challenges, Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), has stressed the critical importance of compiling a credible voter register as the 2024 elections approach. She emphasized that transparent elections can only occur with a trustworthy voter register.
