The Executive Director of Sanitation Ghana DR. OToo Derick Essampong said there is a need for the government and other sanitation agencies to come out with a working plan to manage urban sanitation.
He is of the view that, the City Sanitation Task Force (CSTF) is a multi-stakeholder platform comprising representatives from different sectors of society, including agencies directly responsible for sanitation (divisions and departments ), agencies indirectly involved or impacted, eminent persons, practitioners, representatives of the different stakeholders’ sectors, NGOs and sanitary workers. And there is a need to bring back the role of this task force.
He disclosed this in an interview with Ahotor 92.3 FM in Accra.
He opined that the City Sanitation Plans are strategic planning processes for citywide sanitation sector development. Addressing technical and non-technical aspects of sanitation services, City Sanitation Plans include the vision, missions, and goals of sanitation development as well as strategies to meet these goals.
He reiterated that the population growth, rural migration and the technological and industrial boom are causing an extremely rapid urbanisation in Ghana, posing enormous challenges to cities and large towns, which today host more than 34 million people.
Going forward Dr. Essampong said the sustainable provision of sanitation is particularly challenging in urban areas, where more than millions of households do not have any kind of sanitation facility, and about high percentage of the faecal matter produced is not treated adequately.
In another development with the aim of improving the situation, in the city, the Sanitation Ghana is organizing “MEGA” clean exercise by changing our location to different communities on every fortnight by desilting gutters, weeding and sweeping the streets, conducting environmental seminars, advocating of sanitary environment through the means of television and radio, installing drinking for the vulnerable communities etc. Its vision and goals and the support given by the Government of Sanitation Ghana for its implementation.
SANITATION GHANA (NGO) Is dedicated to various activities aimed at improving the environment and the public health. On the 11TH MAY, 2024, Saturday, the organization will stage and commenced a clean up at Agbogbloshie Market in Accra. Starting from 5:30am to 10:00am
