Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), Prof. Kobby Mensah, asserts that the departure of three individuals from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to run as Independent Candidates in the Ejisu by-election indicates a lack of unity within the party.
As per the Political Marketer, there appears to be a coalition of NPP supporters who are disenchanted with the party, signaling potential disintegration that could lead them to the opposition.
Prof. Mensah further elaborated that some NPP members in the Ejisu constituency feel overlooked by their party and view the by-election as an opportunity to reprimand the party.
The parliamentary by-election in Ejisu, situated in the Ashanti Region, holds significant implications for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), as one of their former members seeks to challenge their candidate independently, potentially altering the party’s status in the legislature.
Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, a former Member of Parliament (MP) for three terms and former Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, who has opted to contest independently against the NPP’s candidate, Kwabena Boateng, stands on the brink of a personal victory that could diminish the NPP’s presence in Parliament.
Historically a stronghold for the NPP, Ejisu’s political landscape now appears uncertain, with credible polls, including those conducted by Global InfoAnalytics, suggesting a tight race, despite the absence of a candidate from the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The recent campaign visit by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to the constituency to rally support for the NPP’s Kwabena Boateng has heightened concerns within the party regarding the potential loss of a seat and its impact on parliamentary balance.
The by-election in Ejisu follows the passing of the then MP for the area, John Ampontuah Kumah, who served as Deputy Minister of Finance until his demise on March 7th this year. A total of 106,812 registered voters are expected to participate in the election across 204 polling stations within the constituency.
During an appearance on Ahotor 92.3 FM‘s morning show ‘AdeKyee Mu Nsem‘ with host Citizen Kofi Owusu, Prof. Kobby Mensah expressed apprehension, stating that the departure of the three Independent candidates from the NPP to contest the Ejisu seat signals a potential defeat for the party in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
