Dr. George Ankomah, Deputy Medical Practitioner at the Sakumono Community Multi Complex Hospital, has expressed concern over the unusually high temperatures currently experienced in the country, describing them as extraordinary.
Attributing the recent heat to climate change, Dr. Ankomah highlighted its adverse effects on Ghana. He explained that heatwaves, as defined by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), bring abnormally high temperatures, affecting both day and night. Dr. Ankomah emphasized the importance of cooler nights for bodily recovery, warning that warmer nights lead to prolonged high temperatures during the day.
Moreover, Dr. Ankomah referenced the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which predicts that global warming will intensify heat waves, making them more frequent and prolonged.
Heatwaves exacerbate various risks, including droughts, fire hazards, floods, and air pollution, compounding their impact on people and the environment.
Speaking on Ahotor 92.3 FM‘s morning show ‘AdeKyee Mu Nsem‘ with host Citizen Kofi Owusu, Dr. Ankomah attributed the recent heat in Ghana not only to climate change but also to human activities such as illegal mining and sand winning.
