The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) strongly condemns the actions of Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, for the arrest of Ing. Michael Wiafe, General Manager of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). According to the IET, this act is an abuse of power and a failure to follow due process.
Ing. Michael Wiafe, who serves as the Ashanti East ECG Manager, found himself arrested and charged for allegedly causing public unrest. This situation arose after Mr. Mensah reported him to the police for disconnecting the power supply to Kumasi Technical University due to a debt of GH₵600,000.00. Subsequently, Mr. Wiafe was granted bail on self-recognizance.
Henry Kwadwo Boateng, President of IET, stressed that the Minister, being a public servant, should have sought guidance from the Managing Director appointed by the President instead of taking direct action. Engr. Boateng pointed out that the Minister’s behavior is unacceptable, as public servants are supposed to work under someone and follow instructions accordingly.
