The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) has issued a one-week ultimatum to the Ghanaian government, urging them to urgently clear essential medical goods that have been held up at the Tema Harbour. Failure to do so, the CSOs warn, will result in significant demonstrations on April 17.
In a media interview, the association highlighted how the Global Fund, an international donor, donated essential medicines worth $40 million last year to improve the country’s healthcare system. However, these medicines have yet to be cleared due to issues with port duties.
This delay has understandably angered the CSOs, who question how the country can expect support from donors like the Global Fund when it fails to waive duties on donations.
The CSOs’ demand to the government is clear: if the medicines are not cleared by the end of the week, they will not tolerate the consequences. Ernest Ossin, the group’s Convenor, conveyed this message sternly during the media interview.
