Madam Charity Okyere has appealed for justice for her son, Festus Okyere, who alleges that he was unlawfully arrested, extorted, and physically abused by some identified police officers at the Kumasi Central Police Station in the Ashanti Region.
The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, December 10, 2025. Festus Okyere recounted that at about 7:00 p.m., he received a call from his former girlfriend, who was in Kumasi for a job interview. She requested his help to secure accommodation for the night, explaining that it was too late for her to return home.
According to Festus, he went to the location she provided, near SG Bank in Kumasi. Upon arrival, he was apprehended by three plainclothes police officers and taken to the Kumasi Central Police Station. He was accused of possessing nude photographs of his former girlfriend with the intent to extort her, an allegation he strongly denies.
Festus further alleged that upon reaching the police station, his mobile phone was seized, effectively cutting him off from contacting his parents or any other person for assistance or bail. He claimed that he was subjected to torture and other forms of maltreatment by some of the officers on duty that night.
He also alleged that the officers demanded GH¢2,000 from him before allowing him to call his parents for bail. When he failed to raise the amount, he was denied access to make the call.
Festus stated that later that night, after enduring what he described as severe mistreatment, he was transferred to the Sofoline Police cells, where he spent the night. The following day, he was brought back to the Kumasi Central Police Station, where his mother eventually intervened.
Speaking on the matter, Madam Charity Okyere expressed deep distress over the ordeal her son endured. She alleged that she was compelled to pay a total of GH¢5,500 before her son was released. She has since made a formal appeal to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Yohonu, and the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection to intervene and ensure justice is served.
Madam Okyere insists that her son was wrongfully accused and subjected to inhumane treatment, and she is calling for a thorough investigation into the conduct of the officers involved at the Kumasi Central Police Station.
