My name is Emmanuel Romeo Tetteh, and wherever you are in Ghana reading this, if your lights are still on, consider yourself lucky. But for many of us, including myself, power outages, or ‘Dumsor’, have become an all too common occurrence.
We don’t need government officials or the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to confirm Dumsor when our lights flicker off unexpectedly in our homes. It’s evident that there’s a power crisis, and it’s time for ECG, Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO), and all stakeholders to be transparent about it and perhaps provide a schedule for these outages.
It’s heartbreaking to see the effects of Dumsor firsthand. My Dad, who served in the Police Service for years, now struggles to make ends meet after his fridge, which he relies on for his business, was damaged due to the unstable power supply just this week and a young boy struggling to survive can’t do anything about it just praying to win bet or something.
And it’s not just me feeling the impact. Even former President John Dramani Mahama, during his recent ‘Building Ghana Tour’ to the Greater Accra Region, experienced the inconvenience of Dumsor firsthand. Despite his efforts to engage with communities and leaders, the power cuts disrupted his meetings, including one with the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs.
In response to their plight, Mr. Mahama generously donated a generator to the Chiefs to alleviate their struggles with power outages. This gesture was met with gratitude from the Chiefs, who recognized Mr. Mahama’s commitment to addressing the power crisis.
LET’S LISTEN TO MR. MAHAMA’S COMMENTS WHEN THE LIGHTS WENT OFF AT THE CHIEFS IN THIS AUDIO:
Upon receiving the generator, the Chief of Nungua King Prof. Odaifio Welentsi III, the Vice Chairman for the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs speaking on behalf of the Chiefs expressed his gratitude to the NDC Presidential Candidate.
Speaking on behalf of Mr. Mahama, Prof. Joshua Alabi highlighted the urgent need for experienced leadership to tackle the country’s challenges, emphasizing Mr. Mahama’s track record in managing similar crises in the past.
In conclusion, let’s acknowledge Mr. Mahama’s efforts in providing relief to those affected by Dumsor. As for me, as I write this, I’m once again in the dark, a stark reminder that Dumsor is indeed back, and it’s affecting us all.
