The LGBTQ+ bill recently passed by parliament, stirring considerable public debate, is not merely a clash of opinions but rather a reflection of individual positions. Yaw Mainoo, Climate Expert and Ablekuma West National Democratic Congress Communication Officer, emphasized on the Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show on Ahotor 92.3 FM, hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra, that issues of morality should not be legislated. Contrary to some assertions, he believes the legislation aims to protect family values rather than dictate morality.
Mainoo argued against any attempt to legislate moral issues, stating that LGBTQ+ matters are not inherently moral concerns. Instead, he contended that the parliamentary bill seeks to safeguard family values.
Delving into the history of LGBTQ+ practices, Mainoo pointed out that such characteristics have existed since 1973. He referenced the World Health Organization’s acceptance of people with these traits as not suffering from mental illness. He also cited research by the American Physiological Society confirming the absence of mental illness in individuals with this sexual orientation. Disagreeing with some leaders who suggest that certain African cultures promote homosexuality, Mainoo insisted that the bill primarily aims to protect family values, distinct from issues of morality.
Mainoo highlighted cultural differences, particularly in African societies where marriage involves two families rather than individual choices, as in the Western world. He emphasized the responsibility of both families to preserve the marital bond through procreation, inheritance, and family values.
Expressing resistance to the propagation of LGBTQ+ practices and values by foreign donors and development partners, Mainoo asserted that Africa’s cultural values are deeply rooted and cannot be easily swayed. He reminded that human rights are guaranteed by law, and social values are anchored in legal frameworks. Questioning the exercise of rights that do not exist, he called for a firm commitment to cultural values.
In a separate appeal, Mainoo urged the NDC fraternity to take training programs seriously, aiming to enhance the party’s chances of success in the upcoming 2024 December polls.
