It would be appropriate and factual if President Nana Addo, the President of Ghana, provides an accurate assessment of the state of the economy, especially considering the lack of significant development over the past seven years, as the nation approaches his final term. The Member of Parliament for Keta, Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpe, shared this perspective on the Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show on Ahotor 92.3 FM, hosted by Alex Nana Dogbey in Accra.
Gakpe believes that the performance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the past eight years has resulted in poverty and injustice for the people of Ghana. He points out that under the agenda 111, the government’s flagship project in the health sector, there has been a lack of completion of any projects. Functional health facilities have even been demolished, and promises to build new ones have not materialized, despite substantial borrowing by the government.
Moreover, Gakpe highlights the grim reality of food inflation and precarious food sufficiency. He expresses concern that the buffer stock, intended to serve as a stop-gap measure for food supply, has not performed as expected. Ghanaians, according to him, are facing severe economic hardship, struggling to meet their daily needs. The instability of the cedi against the dollar in the international markets further complicates doing business in Ghana, resulting in fluctuating prices of goods and services.
In anticipation of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s State of the Nation address to Parliament on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, as mandated by Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution, Gakpe urges the President to be truthful about the challenges the country is facing. He emphasizes the importance of the President addressing the reality and providing insights into strategies aimed at improving the prevailing economic conditions.
The forthcoming address, which will be President Akufo-Addo’s penultimate presentation to Parliament, is expected to outline the government’s principal policy objectives for the year and shed light on strategies to address economic challenges.
