The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is waiting for Francis Abu’s recovery progress before deciding on his chances of playing at the 2026 World Cup.
The Toulouse FC midfielder suffered a horrific ankle injury, including two fractured bones, during a friendly game against Japan last month.
Abu underwent successful surgery by a top Japanese surgeon, who promised a swift recovery. While Toulouse FC initially stated Abu would likely miss the World Cup, his early return to training has sparked optimism.
“We have to wait for Abu to recover and start field work,” said GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum. “Once he begins to get some playing time, we’ll make a decision.” Ghana coach Otto Addo has until June 1, 2026, to announce his final World Cup squad.
