Live weapons and Illegal small arms proliferation are on the increase and considering the surge of atrocities going in Bawku which has a lot of political and tribal undertone is drifting the country into chaotic instability situation. There is the need for a concerted effort from the stake holders to engage in negotiations and dialogue with the identifiable parties to find a lasting solution to these long intra-tribal conflicts in Bawku.
The Security Policy Expert at the Centre for Security Dialogue and Peace Anthony Acquaye said this on Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show on Ahotor FM 92.3 and hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra.
He is of the view that, according to a research reports which dates back since 2018 about 2.1 million unregistered Illegal small arms is in circulation and this points to sources of supply; In Greater Accra, to Ashaiman, Central Region links to Kasoa and in Kumasi these small arms supply source can be trace to Kumasi Magazine.
He reiterated that ineffective boarder post along the Bawku enclave is also another source of worried where arms from the Sahelian region which is associated with terrorist groups is also another indicator given grounds to the conflicts where arms proliferation is on the increase in the area.
Looking at the issues coming out from the Bawku, the underlining factors such as political patronage, tribal interest and economic value associated with lands has to be critically examine through dialogue, negotiations and engagement to find lasting solution to this long age conflict.
He therefore noted that, the civil, tribal and military unrest in the area is really affecting every economic activity in the area which is bring a tolling of hardship and severe economic hardship to workers more especially those who are working in the service industry to save lives and property.
Anthony Acquaye, further call on the stake holders and main actors identified in the intra-tribal conflict must collaborate to employ all available means to come out and offer alternative resolution avenue to find lasting solution to this conflict in the Norther part of the country.
