The Seventh-Day Adventist Church is advocating for an amendment to the December 7, 2024, date for the general elections.
In a petition addressed to both the Electoral Commission and the Attorney General, the church outlined that the current date, falling on a Saturday, clashes with their Sabbath—a sacred day devoted to the worship of God.
The proposed alternative, as stated in the petition, is the adoption of “the first (1st) or second (2nd) Tuesday of November” as the new date for Ghana’s general elections.
The church emphasizes the need for this change to be codified to ensure Adventists have the freedom to practice their worship.
In a meeting with the Electoral Commission on June 7, 2023, the leadership of the Seventh-day Adventist Church formally presented this proposal for consideration.
James Kwabena Bomfeh, Deputy Head of Religious Liberty at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, justified the proposed date change in an interview with the media.
He asserted that moving the elections to November would allow for ample preparation during the subsequent transition process.
Additionally, he argued that this adjustment would enable traditional worshippers, who typically refrain from farm activities on Tuesdays, to actively participate in the electoral process.
