John Mahama’s message on Constitution Day: Highlights Constitutional Reform in Ghana

Former President John Mahama, the 2024 Flag Bearer of the National Democratic Congress, has commemorated the 31st anniversary of Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

He emphasized the importance of democratic governance, expressing pride in the nation’s progress despite challenges.

Mr. Mahama acknowledged the roles of Presidents Rawlings and Atta Mills in establishing the 1992 Constitution and the Constitution Review Commission, regretting that many legal obstacles are hindering its implementation.

He spoke of a commitment to governance reforms if elected in December 2024, Mahama aimed to strengthen institutions, protect citizens’ rights, and combat corruption.

He urged collective responsibility to sustain democracy and called on duty-bearers to uphold constitutional principles. Criticizing the government for undermining democratic rights, he condemned the use of rogue elements in security agencies during the 2020 elections, urging vigilance for peaceful upcoming elections.

Expressing concern over the 2016 election-related deaths, Mr. Mahama called for accountability and criticized President Akufo-Addo’s silence on the matter.

He stressed the government’s obligation to ensure peaceful elections and urged Ghanaians to remain vigilant. Mahama concluded by congratulating Ghanaians on the occasion, expressing hope for the ”continued flourishing of democracy and Ghana’s rise as a beacon of success”.
