WINTER WILL KILL US IF THE GOVERNMENT FAILS TO PAY OUR STIPENDS – GHANAIAN STUDENTS IN UK
Ghanaian students in the UK on the government of Ghana scholarship have appealed to the scholarship secretariat to release stipends owed to them.
According to them, they face eviction from their landlords as the government has failed to honor the release of stipends in the last three months.
Stipend” word derived from the Latin “stipendium” means “soldier’s pay”. It is a fixed amount of money paid at regular intervals in exchange for specific services. However, some scholarships take care of the fees as well as also provide a stipend. Stipends are provided in exchange of duties. It is generally lower than a salary.
The intention of the stipend is generally to provide some compensation to the recipient while he/she is gaining experience and knowledge in a specific field. Universities usually refer to money paid to graduate students as a stipend to denote complimentary benefits. A stipend can also be provided as a form of salary to a person who is not fully eligible to become a salaried employee, during the initial period of joining.
Sometimes a periodic payment of scholarship and fellowship grants is also considered as a stipend.
Speaking to Ahotor News, one of them who spoke on the condition of anonymity indicates their lives will be mislabeled should they be evicted as winter has set in.
Meanwhile, the head of diaspora relations at the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat Richard Gyamfi has assured of effort to get the finance ministry to release funds for the settling of arrears.
