The Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Member of Parliament for the Savelugu Constituency, Hajia Mary Salifu Boforo, who passed away at the age of 74.
She died on Saturday, December 13, 2025, in the Greater Accra Region. Her burial, in accordance with Islamic rites, is scheduled for Monday, December 15, 2025, at the Savelugu Public Cemetery.
Hajia Boforo was among the longest-serving legislators under Ghana’s Fourth Republic, representing the Savelugu Constituency on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from 1997 to 2017. Her two decades in Parliament were marked by dedication to legislative work, constituency development, and inclusive governance.
Born on February 25, 1951, she was an entrepreneur before entering politics, owning a barkery, and engaging actively in farming. She received vocational training at the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI) in 1972.
During her parliamentary career, Hajia Boforo rose to become First Deputy Majority Chief Whip in 2014 and was widely respected for her advocacy for women’s empowerment and children’s welfare. She also served as a lead advocate with the Ghana Developing Communities Association (GDCA) and chaired the Parliamentary Women’s Caucus.
Reacting to her passing, Dean of the Parliamentary Press Corps, Mr. Simon Agianab described the late former MP as a strong ally of the media and a unifying presence in Parliament.
“Hajia Mary Salifu Boforo maintained an excellent working relationship with the Parliamentary Press Corps. She respected the role of the media in Ghana’s democracy and was always accessible and supportive to journalists. Her passing is a major loss to Parliament and the nation,” Mr. Agianab said.
Hajia Mary Salifu Boforo is remembered for her humility, dedication to public service, and lasting contributions to parliamentary democracy.
I once asked about her from Brothers Sampson and Dannis. I told them how much I missed her and asked when they last heard from her.
Oh, Mum, may the Almighty Allah grant your beautiful soul eternal rest. PPC will forever miss you — a mother in every sense of the word.
She was like a hen to PPC; she would rather go hungry than allow PPC to lack. As an organizer at the time, I worked closely with her, and she ensured that every PPC member received a full food pack — not to mention her weekly chocolates.
Sadly, this is not what we see today. Some people do not even want to hear about PPC anymore.
She is the reason a certain lady at the Marshall’s department still does not speak to me — and I do not care. She was right in her actions.
I doubt PPC will ever find a replacement for her.
She personally prepared our packages, and whenever the ladies tried to withhold or take part of them, reporting it to her meant action. She never spared anyone. She always said PPC was part of them, and without us, whatever work they did would go unnoticed.
One day, a lady tried to take our chocolates. I reported her to the Hajia — and fire followed!.
Painful as it was, that moment always reminds me of Hajia’s firmness and love for PPC.
I could write so much more about her, like the late Murtala, but Allah knows best.
May she rest in perfect peace.
