SCRAPING THE COVID-19 TAX WILL BE BAD FOR THE HEALTH SECTOR – ALI NAKYENA

An Economist, Ali Nakyena has said scrapping the COVID-19 tax Levy will be bad for the health sector. The tax was introduced by the government during the peak of the COVID-19 crisis.

The 1% levy was designed to provide financial support for combating the virus and its attendant challenge. Mr. Ali Nakyena suggested Government consider renaming the COVID-19 levy to better address the pressing challenge in the healthcare sector.

He noted that retaining the revenue stream and directing it towards healthcare solutions is crucial.
He further underscores the need for a sustainable approach suggesting that if the COVID-19 levy were to be scrapped, it could lead to a situation where new levies like dialysis levy might need to be introduced to address the challenges faced by the healthcare Institutions such as the Korle- Bu Teaching Hospital.
