Drop in Feed Costs: Egg Sellers Cautioned to Stop Overpricing

The National Vice President of the Poultry Farmers Association of Ghana, Dr. Boris Baidoo, has issued a firm warning to egg sellers and food vendors who are inflating prices despite a notable drop in poultry feed costs.

He explained that feed prices have reduced significantly under the current agricultural policy direction, making the cost of producing eggs far lower than in previous months. For that reason, he said vendors have no justification to sell a single egg above GHS 3 or two eggs above GHS 5.

Dr. Baidoo stressed that both fried-egg and boiled-egg sellers must respect the pricing structure agreed upon by the Association. He noted that selling two eggs for GHS 5 is fair to consumers and still provides vendors and farmers with reasonable profit margins.

He pointed out that a crate contains 30 eggs, and with the reduced cost of feed, farmers are able to break even, pay their workers, and remain profitable without pushing prices beyond the reach of consumers.

Dr. Baidoo reiterated his backing for the National Chairman and the leadership of the Association as they work to stabilize egg prices nationwide. He also acknowledged the renewed government support for the poultry sector, indicating that improved monitoring and reduced importation of foreign eggs are helping boost local production capacity.
