(AUDIO): GBA IS COMMITTED TO ENSURING THE JUDICIARY REMAINS INDEPENDENT AND IMPARTIAL

The President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Yaw Acheampong Boafo, has denied allegations leveled against the Ghana Bar Association, that political affiliation is considered when judges are appointed to the bench.
Speaking to the media, Mr. Boafo said that the allegations are untrue and that judges are appointed based on merit alone.
Boafo, who is also a member of the Appointment Committee of the Judicial Council, said that the committee does not ask applicants about their political affiliation.
Boafo’s comments come amid concerns about the politicization of the judiciary in Ghana. In recent years, there have been several cases of judges being accused of being biased in and in favor of the government.
In another development, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, an aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, has reiterated, that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s criticism of the former President John Dramani Mahama on remarks of alleged judicial bias, describing it as the “most irresponsible and reckless” any President could ever done.
Mr. Ofosu Kwakye said Akufo-Addo’s statement had vindicated Mahama’s position that the judiciary was packed with judges aligned with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
However, Mr. Boafo said that the GBA is committed to ensuring that the judiciary remains independent and impartial.
