The posturing of Madam Jean Mensah of the Electoral Commission position with respect to the ongoing limited voter registration can best be described as if the institution has lost its independent role and is in bed with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The former Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA) Mr. Osei Kwame Griffiths, said this on Ahotor FM’s political show in Accra. He said it’s very unfortunate and dangerous some institutions such as the Judiciary, Police, and the EC have been politicized and if care is not taken this can degenerate into unhealthy political tension in the country.
He is of the view that with the economic situation in the country, there is a need for the government to collaborate with all stakeholders in election management in the ongoing limited voter registration to discourage the early challenges associated with the process.
He recalled the process, where the EC under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) opened more registration centers in all in its limited registration to control this spillover of time wasting, going on the first day of the exercise. It’s very unfortunate that the EC under Jean Mensah is positioned to execute this national exercise even without the concern of the Statistical Service Department, where vital information on national demography can serve as a primary source document that can help in the ongoing limited registration.
He reiterated that some of the machines being used for the exercise are not robust enough to withstand a long time to serve the people who have turned up for the exercise.
The former Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA) Mr. Kwame Osei Grifiths opined that, though NDC is using all the democratic tools of demonstration and the court system to fight for their rights, it’s very unfortunate to see the government in bed with EC in the ongoing limited voter registration. He disclosed that, looking at the security arrangement of the EC commissioner it looks as if Madam Jean Mensah is getting more powerful than the president of the republic.
