Nene Dadebom Anim II, Vice Chairman of the Ada Songo Lagoon Association and Chief of Toflokpo Salom within the Ada Traditional Area, has expressed concern that President Akufo-Addo intends to transfer ownership of their rightful land to MacDan.
He feels the president is disregarding the well-being of the local people by supporting companies like Electrochem and MacDan without considering the negative impacts on the indigenous population.
Despite the president’s claim of being a father to all, Nene Dadebom Anim II believes this fatherly concern is absent when it comes to the community’s interests. The president’s reported use of police, military, land guards, and locals to assist these companies in their activities is deemed unnecessary.
Nene Dadebom Anim II’s primary concern is ensuring that his people can work and sustain their livelihoods without having to sacrifice their homes or well-being for the profit of these companies.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Wednesday commissioned the $88 million redeveloped Songor Lagoon Salt project in Sege, in the Ada West district of the Greater Accra Region.
Electrochem Ghana Limited, the operator of the salt mine, is a subsidiary of the McDan Group of Companies and a wholly Ghanaian-owned company.
The Mine currently has the ability to produce some 650,000 metric tons of salt per annum.
It is expected to increase its productive capacity to one million metric tons in 2024, and to two million metric tons by 2027.
President Akufo-Addo, in launching the project, noted that previous governments had unsuccessfully attempted for 54 years to harness the value of the Songor Lagoon.
