Italian-based Ghanaian musician and actor, Kwame Obroni has urged Ghanaians to speak their local dialect, especially with their children, as a way of instilling the values of their culture in them.
Speaking with Obaapa Janee on Ahotor Fm on as the nation celebrates Ghana’s month this March, said, it is unfortunate that Ghanaians have thrown what they have as a country, and taken someone’s language as our own
The Italian-based Ghanaian who speaks Twi fluently said he started speaking Twi when he was in Italy because he was living with Ghanaians.
He said ‘’ I started speaking Twi when I was in Italy because I was living with Ghanaians, and you know if you move with Ghanaians you will definitely know how to talk about Twi.’’
”Ghanaians don’t know what they have, because if you know who you are, you won’t let someone’s language take dominance over your own, to the extent of punishing students who speak their local languages in schools. It is unfortunate as a country.’ ’He stressed.
‘’I’m not saying we shouldn’t learn English but we have it as a subject so it is okay, but making it a national language is unfortunate’’.
When you go to China or any other country that doesn’t speak English, they use their own language to teach their children and learn the English language as a subject.’’
He added that ‘’have you noticed that most Ghanaian youths find it difficult to speak English, and when they speak Twi, English slips into it.
He however added that, we should not be ashamed of what we have, our culture or the language but we should be bold to speak our local dialects and even teach foreigners as well.
He is out with his new single music dubbed ‘‘Adofo da’’ meaning ”lovers day’ which is doing very well on all the digital platforms.
