The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo believes his good works for the party will be recognised by the King and Queen makers of the party to retain him as the National Chairman of the party into the 2024 elections.
Appearing on Adom Fm’s Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Ampofo rejected rumours that the NDC will surprisingly present him rather than John Dramani Mahama as the flagbearer of the party for the 2024 elections.
“No it will not be me because the party as given me a work to do for now and being the 2024 flagbearer is not part of it”
“My work is to make the NDC attractive to elect a better candidate to be the flagbearer to help us win the 2024 general elections so I’m not part of that race mine is to look over the party”. He replied to a question by the host that if it’s true the NDC is planning to name him as their flagbearer.
Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo believes his leadership as the National Chairman of the NDC together with the overall effort of the party faithfuls won the 2020 elections but the NPP together with EC and the Supreme Court had different plans.
“We won back all the 53 seats we lost in the 2016 during the 2020 elections with some new seats in addition which would have made the NDC the majority in Parliament but some intimidations from government prevented it, which is why Ghana’s current parliament is hanged for the first no clear majority or minority” He said in Twi.
Dr. Ampofo said his work as the National Chairman of the NDC will be complete if the party wins power which he pledged that together with his team will not rest until they’ve achieved that.
He thinks they got close in achieving that dream if the Supreme court had been fair in handling the 2020 elections petition.
“We know that the 2020 elections was an election that we won we did all we could for supreme court to listen to us but the unanimous 7 threw us out”
When asked if he was publicly declaring that he will be contesting for the National Chairmanship, He replied “When the time comes I will meet the good people who voted for me and account to them what I have done.”
“They will allow me to continue if they like my work as the National Chairman and I know they like it so I will be retained”
Dr. Ampofo was thrown with the question if he knew there is a wild rumour circulating that he could be be contesting his current position with the General Secretary of the party Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, he had this to say:
“We are currently having our Branch elections we will move to constituency elections next, from there to Regional elections before opening nominations for National elections until we will know who is contesting who”.
He concluded with a strong believe that he will be retained as the National Chairman regardless who contest him.
“The only thing I will say is I will defend my title and I believe that I will retain my position it doesn’t matter who contest me I will be the National Chairman ” Dr. Ofosu Ampofo said.
