A leading member of Alan Kyeremanteng campaign team Hopeson Adorye has said that he received a call from Alan Kyeremanten, the Trade and Industry Minister endorsing his comments at the Health Walk organized in Kumasi.
Hopeson Adorye has come under intense pressure and condemnation after he asserted that Northerners who belong to the Dombo forefathers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are limited to being running mates.
“There is one thing I am going to say. The NPP has a tradition. Our tradition is Busia, Danquah and Dombo. Dankwa represents Eastern Region and the bottom (south), Danquah represents Ashanti Region and the Bono areas, while Dombo represents Northern Region,” Hopeson Adorye, talk participants of a walk in Kumasi dubbed a “Walk for Alan.”
He continued: “whenever a Dankwa leads the party, the Busia side step aside but there is a Dombo (for running mate), and whenever a Busia lead, the Dankwa side step aside but there is a Dombo (for running mate). As for the Dombos they are always there (for running mate).”
“In 1992, Albert Adu Boahen, who represented Dankwa contested with a Dombo. In 1996, we had the Great Alliance bit in 2000, it came to Kufuor, who is a Busia, and he runned with a Dombo (as his running mate). Then after Kufuor, it moved back to Dankwa, with President Akufo-Addo. He also contested the election with another Dombo (as his running mate), who is Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia. If it went to Dankwa, cane to Busia, went back to Dankwa, where should it go now, is it not Busia?” Hopeson Adorye said.
His comments were condemned by well-meaning members of the New Patriotic Party who believe that the party needs everyone on board and therefore divisive comments such as his should not be encouraged.
Hopeson Adorye in an interview with Accra-based Metro Television said even though people in the party have condemned what he said, Alan Kyeremanten has patted him on his elbow and said the comments were not injurious to the unity of the political party.

However, he indicated that Alan Kyeremanten advised that he apologized in order to let matters settle.
“This morning [August 15], I had a call from Alan Kyerematen and he said he has seen all the commentaries that are going on. He has requested for the video. He has watched it. I did not mean any bad but my statement has been misconstrued so he’s advising me to apologize. I said that’s all, I will not hesitate so I promised him that I am going to do that and around 11, I released a statement to apologize to the public for that misleading headline… So, I have duly apologized to our Northern brothers,” he said.
