Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh aka Napo, the Minister for Energy, has hinted that Ghanaians without Ghana Cards will soon be unable to obtain energy or get electricity meters in their homes.
The law, which has not yet been put into effect, is a component of the government’s plan for energy sector development, according to the minister.
He said: “Very soon, if you don’t have Ghana Card, you wouldn’t get a meter. Regulations are subjected to change and it is all about development”.
“It is the rules set by this country that I follow. It is the rules set by the country which states that, if you need a meter, do this or that”, the Minister explained
Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh’s remarks follow a discussion over Hon. Ursula Owusu Akuful’s order to ban SIM cards by the end of September if people don’t link their mobile SIM cards to their National IDs.
The new deadline for re-registering SIM cards with the Ghana card has raised concerns from the National Identification Authority (NIA), though.
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has not specified a timeframe for the usage of the Ghana Card as identification for those applying for new power meters.
