‘Until our children are able to read, they can’t become anything to us’ – Municipal Education Director

The Tema West Municipal Education Director, Isaac MacCarthy-Mensah has said, it will become difficult for our children to become anything better to us if they can’t read and understand.

Speaking at the maiden edition of the Basic School Reading Festival for Early Grade organised by the Tema West Municipal Education Directorate which took place at Tema, Community 2, Good Shepherd Parish Hall on Thursday July 21, 2022, he indicated that in 2014, a research was done to find out how basic school children are reading

Mr MacCarthy Mensah stated, the report from the research showed that our children from especially lower primary school cannot read and understand, therefore the United States Agency for International Development and the Ghana Education Service through the Ministry of Education came up with plans to help these young ones to be able to read and understand

The outcome of it is this reading festival to let parents and other stakeholders know what their children are being taught in school

“Somebody said something derogatory about we Africans, that if you want to hide something from us, put it in a book. If anybody could become a scientist, a lawyer, soldier, a pilot, police and the greatest of them all, a teacher, reading must be a very important aspect of the person’s engagements”

“If anybody want to become anything better in life then that person must be able to learn to read and read to learn” he added

He urged parents to add to the efforts of teachers by helping their children to inculcate the habit of reading very well so  they can become better people in society
