Nungua Secondary School Wins Free SHS Debate.
On Mmabunu Mmre on Ahotor 92.3 Fm on Saturday 11th March, 2017,
Akyena Brantuo put the the topic this way, “The future of Ghana’s education is bright with free SHS”
In that debate, Nungua Secondary School won decisively against opponents from Amasaman Secondary Technical School, who spoke for the motion.
Nungua Secondary School, represented by master Nathaniel Angaga Awentiirin and Madam Lucy Adjoedison spoke against the motion.
Some of their arguments include the following,
1. The quality of current education is poor especially at the basic level which is supposed to be free. Yet the quality of basic education at the private school where fees are paid is higher compare to the public schools.
2. Free education will lead to overcrowding in our schools and worsen the teacher-student ratio and student-textbook ratio.
3. Ghana is not economically stable to implement the policy. We must identify funding source which is stable and regular.
4. Parents will have a lazy and careless attitude towards the upbringing of their wards. They will expect government to be responsible for what is parental responsibility.
5. Also students will be lazy towards their studies as failure in academics will not immediately affect them. They can always enrol again at the next enrollment date.
6. Private schools will have to close down as there is a free option at the public sector.
