President of the Policy Initiatives for Economic Development, Daniel Amateye Anim-Prempeh, has condemned the monetization of politics in the country describing it as a dangerous trend which will adversely affect the development of the country.
At the just ended regional elections of the New Patriotic Party, candidates vying for positions were seen ‘paying’ delegates to vote them into power which some delegates after receiving monies among others, did not live up to the expectations, sparking agitations on the part of the candidates.
Speaking in an interview on the issue, the Development Economist noted firmly that the act is a dangerous one which will hamper the development of the country.
Anim-Prempeh who is also a Development Economist said once a politician pays their way into positions; it breeds corruption as these politicians will manipulate figures to their favor to pay for the monies they used during elections.
He added that, monetizing politics will deny people with ‘the know how’ the opportunity to hold positions and to participate in the political space of the country as they are financially handicapped.
Though the situation is a difficult one, Daniel Amateye Anim-Prempeh is of the view that, consistent advocacy against the monetizing of politics will stop the act because to him, if it is not curbed, the country will bear the brunt.
