The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, who is also a leading member of the Convention’s People Party (CPP) Mr. Kwesi Pratt Junior, has described the 24th day of February, a day marking the overthrow of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, first President of the Republic of Ghana, as ‘Ghana’s day of shame.’
Mr. Pratt, who spoke on 360 Politics with Akyena Brantuo on Ahotorfm on Friday 24th February 2017 was reacting to the post electoral violence which occurred after the 2016 Presidential and Parliamentary elections in Ghana. Incidentally that same day marked the day of the 1966 coup which overthrew a CPP government.
Mr Pratt explained further that the 1966 coup which was stage by the CID of the United States of America with some indigenous collaborators is so characterized as shameful because it toppled a legitimate government, and brought an end to massive infrastructure development in the country of Ghana.
He further added that violence in our body politics which should not be entertained is largely attributable to ignorance as those who orchestrate it lack basic understanding about the purpose of democracy which is merely trading of different ideas for national development.
On the issue of post electoral violence, it can be recalled that there has been series of violence which includes the attacks on a police man at the flagstaff house, seizures of cars from opposition members and taking over of national installation such as the passport office and some public toilets by persons believe to be supporters of the ruling NPP government and who have been labeled as invincible forces.
On their part, the NDC has called off a protest March against the said development following what they say is a condemnation of the said development by the president Akuffo Addo
