The Executive Director, Institute of Liberty and Policy Innovation (ILAPI) Peter Bismarck Kwoffie, is the latest to condemn the action of the MP for Ewutu Senya East Constituency, Mavis Hawa Koomson in the Central region, in the shooting incidence that occurred in her pooling centre.
According to Mr Kwoffie, the action of the Minister was an upfront to our fledgling democracy and the violation of the rule of law, and therefore expected the Electoral Commission to have issued a statement to condemn the action of the Minister, whose action affected the smooth voter registration exercise, which is the sole mandate of the EC., as well as other political parties across the country.
In an interview on Ahotor 92.3fm, Mr Kwoffie, noted that, the action of the Minster is condemnable but unfortunately, the leader of the country’s democracy and the champion of human rights have been silent which sends an unfortunate signal to thuggery and violence, which the country has had to deal with during elections.
He said, being a Member of Parliament where they (MPs) enjoy a level of immunity, the Speaker of Parliament and the House should have issued a statement to send a sign of warning to all law makers that, the House does not condone acts of violence and bravado, but unfortunately, the institutions have been silent over such a condemnable action.
The Peace Council, the Bishop Catholic Conference, IMANI – Ghana and other Civil Society Organisations have condemned the Minister’s action and called for her prosecution.
However the Deputy General Secretary, Nana Obiri Boahene and the Chairman, of the ruling government –New Patriotic Party have exonerated the action of Hawa Koomson adding that, it was in her self defense.
Mr Kwoffie noted the abuse of power and incumbency on the side of the major two parties any time they are in government, which according to him undermines the national security.
The ILAPI boss noted that, Mavis Hawa Koomson had no reason to have fired the gun since there was no evidence of her life being threatened, and questioned her motive for even not informing the security capo of the area when, as she claimed, some people were being ‘bussed’ to her constituency to register in the voter registration exercise.
‘ Hawa Koomson is the Chairperson of the Municipal Security of the Constituency as an MP for the area so she could have informed the Police Commander and the Regional Electoral Officer, without her being even physically present at the centre”.
“Every government in power has the security at its side. . . . . . . . . . . .as at now, we should expect some of these things in the coming days”.
