Security Expert Urges Inclusive Approach as Ghana Prepares for Nationwide Gun Amnesty

Following the government of Ghana’s announcement of plans to introduce a nationwide gun amnesty aimed at curbing the growing spread of illicit firearms and rising gun-related violence, Security Consultant Richard Kumadoe has shared his views on how the initiative can be effectively implemented.

The proposed amnesty, which will be rolled out through the Ministry of the Interior and the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA), seeks to encourage citizens to voluntarily surrender unlicensed or illegal weapons without facing prosecution.

Speaking on the matter, Mr. Kumadoe emphasized the importance of engaging key stakeholders and community leaders in the process.

> “In communities affected by conflict or even across the entire country,it is crucial to involve opinion leaders, local government officials, Members of Parliament, district and municipal chiefs,” he said. “These figures should play a leading role in the public education and awareness campaigns that accompany the amnesty.”

He further highlighted the need for clear guidelines and transparency to ensure public confidence in the program.

> “One major consideration should be the logistics: where people can safely surrender their firearms, what the modalities are, who collects the information, and how transparent the entire process will be,” Mr. Kumadoe noted. “If the public sees genuine transparency, they will be more willing to hand over weapons especially those that do not belong to them or were passed down to them without any legitimate reason to keep.”

Mr. Kumadoe’s remarks underscore the critical role of trust, communication, and community participation in ensuring the success of Ghana’s forthcoming gun amnesty program.
