The National Chairman of the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU), Kwame Kuma says, the Union has not increased transport fares across the country, and has asked all commercial drivers who have done so to desist from the act.
He explained that, there are discussions with the Ministry of Transport for an adjustment in the transport fares that would benefit all stakeholders, but has not arrived at any conclusion, and it is therefore un acceptable for any commercial driver to jump the gun.
The Concerned Drivers Association for weeks now has threatened to increase transport fares if government does not reduce prices on fuel products.
It accused the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council, the mother body for regulating the transport sector, for being in bed with government, thereby ignoring its core mandate.
The government announced, as part of measures to reduce the spread of covid-19, a physical distancing policy that affected the reduction of passengers in commercial transport, reducing the income of the transport owners.
It has also increased the cost of petroleum products thereby having a negative impact on the commercial drivers, hence their demand for the increment of the transport fares.
However, the Chairman of the GPRTU in an interview with Ahotor 92.3fm Morning Show said, the discussion is still underway, and therefore any increment now is an illegality.
