Athletes to get stimulus package soon – Sports Minister

Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Isaac Kwame Asiamah says his office is really worried about the impact of Covid-19 on athletes as he believes they are the most affected of all sports persons in Ghana.

The Minister claims that, even if the football clubs are given soft loans, they might end up not being able to pay and that will become another problem.

“As a way to mitigate the (financial) plight of athletes caused by Covid-19, the Sports Ministry is collaborating with the National Olympic Committee (NOC), the National Sports Authority (NSA), the Youth Employment Authority (YEA), and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for the institution of a stimulus package known as Youth in Elite Sports for Ghana which will be launched soon.”

The Minister who is MP for Atwima Mponua is of the view that, government has to pay attention to the athletes.

He said there have been lots of engagements with other stakeholders and the government to find a proper solution for the athletes in these times.

During a press conference in Accra, he said : “Athletes are the most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and it is a worry to all of us.”

The Covid-19 pandemic has halted all sporting activities in the country. Although Government has eased restrictions on some individual and non contact sports, football, volley ball and beach soccer are still on hold until further notice
