The Electoral Commission (EC) has been directed by the Supreme Court to file by 8th June, 2020 a comprehensive Statement of Case setting out legal basis for excluding the existing Voter’s ID for the new registration.
The seven-member panel of judges asked the EC to provide legal reasons in the form of a supplementary statement of the case.
The seven-panel of judges are Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah, Justices Jones Dotse, Paul Baffoe Bonnie, Sulley Gbadegbe, Samuel Marfo Sau, Nene Amegatse, and Prof Ashie Kotey.
The lawyers in the case are Godwin Tamakloe for the NDC, Justin Amenuvor for the Electoral Commission and Godfred Dame representing the Attorney General.
The NDC is challenging the EC for the compilation of a new voter register on the grounds that, the EC lacks the constitutional power to go ahead with its plans.
Explaining that, the EC can only compile a new voter register once, and thereafter revise it periodically as deem fir by the law.
Thje NDC is also asking the apex court to declare as unlawful the EC’s decision to bar the use of the old voter ID card as a registration proof in the compilation of a new voter register.
The decision of the EC, according to the NDC is baseless and a breach of the constitution.
