The Electoral Commission says it will go ahead to compile a new voter’s register despite facing numerous demonstrations from civil society groups and some political parties to oppose it.
In a statement released by the Electoral Commission, stated that with the backing of Article 46 of the 1992 constitution, it will not allow any person or authority to direct or control them in the performance of it’s functions so therefore it will go ahead to compile a new register.
Speaking on Ahotor Fm’s morning show Adekyemu Nsem with the host Citizen Kofi Owusu, the National Chairman of the biggest opposition party in the country that is the National Democratic Congress(NDC), Hon. Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo questioned why the ruling NPP is backing the idea of a new register.
“Between NDC and NPP who should run away from the current register?” Hon. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo asked.
He further said they rather should have called for a new voter’s register because the last time the current register was used in a General elections the NDC lost with over 1 million votes.
He asked why the NPP who won the elections with over 1 million votes calling for a register to be compiled.
“Those who won the 2016 elections with the current register with over 1 million votes are those running from the register, why are they running from the register; that is the basic question we are asking” He said.
Hon. Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo expressed his dissatisfactions in the EC for doubting the credibility of a register they themselves worked on
“The body that sat to compile the register is the same body who is saying it is not happy with the work they have done, if you put 2 and 2 together it dosen’t gel because this was the register recently used for the district assembly elections which was successful, so what are you afraid of”
The date for the compilation of the new register is yet to be announced but the NDC says they will resist it using legal and legitimate means.
