There’s a saying that silence is golden. The Good Book actually admonishes us to be mindful of our utterances and it’s never ever been most appropriate than in these days.
The other day I was taken aback by the comparison by Vice President Bawumia of ex-President John Mahama’s handling of dumsor – the incessant power outages that plagued Ghana a few years ago- and the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic by the NPP government led by President Akufo-Addo.
However on this ocassion I thought the comparism was unfounded. It’s been described as comparing a website to a newspaper or comparing a fatal accident to a domestic squabble.
Sometimes it’s obvious that in our quest to score political points, we make pronouncements which we realise we shouldn’t have made.
Indeed sometimes we realise only too late after a verbal diarhoea has resulted in an avalanche of either emotional outpouring or a diatribe.
As Ghanaians grapple with the hardships imposed by the pandemic, it behoves on all our leaders to ensure that we are united against this unseen enemy that knows no political colors, tribal group or professional barriers.
It is imperative that we remain united in this firght against the corona virus and do not allow parochial interests to divide us and create unnecessary rivalries and acrimony which will dilute our collective efforts as a people.
There have been calls on government to provide facemasks for the populace. My humble view is that we need to take our destiny into our own hands and ensure we protect ourselves from the pandemic.
Yes it will be great if government could provide the face masks for us all but it’s like you have a sore and you expect someone to come nurse your wond for you when you know how to treat it your self.
The other day, my ten year old grand daughter Kiki demonstrated to me how to use a piece of cloth to create your own face mask. This means we all have no excuse not to wear our face masks.
The thing is self-preservation is crucial and we can’t expect anyone to do that for us.
Let’s thefore respect the protocols of personal hygiene, social distancing and avoiding crowded places.
Finally, I believe our Veep has learnt his lessons and will ensure that he doesn’t attract ignominy to the high office he occupies.
Meanwhile, let’s all stay safe…..
