Resist any increment in transport fares now – passengers told

The Chairman of the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU), Kwame Kuma has blasted the True Drivers Association in Ghana, for what he described as intensity to the plight of most Ghanaians especially in this era of covid-19 pandemic.

Adding that, almost all well-meaning organizations are supporting the effort of reducing the menace with various financial and logistical supports, and it is therefore unacceptable for the Spokesperson of the True Drivers Association, Yaw Barima to threaten to increase transport fares by 20%.

Mr Kuma in an interview said, it is the responsibility of every good citizen at this crucial time, to make sacrifices to the national agenda of fighting the covid-19 which has claimed many lives and done havoc to the national budget.

Therefore to ask for an increment in transport fares at this crucial time in the life of the nation is most unfortunate.

The True Drivers Union has threatened to increase transport fares by 20% if government does not reduce prices of petroleum products especially when world prices of the crude oil has fallen significantly.

But Mr Kumah said this demand is misplaced and called on all transport Associations to be governed by the national interest of fighting the covid-19 and not add extra burden to the government and the citizens in these trying times.

He has therefore called on passengers to resist any form of transport increment.
