Mutawakilu rejects allegations of bribery and corruption

Ranking member of Parliamentary Select Committee on Mines and Energy Committee and MP, for Damango Mutawakilu  Adams has rejected allegations of bribery and corruption against Parliament in the approval of the AKSA Energy deal.

According to him as a vice chairman of the Mines and Energy Committee then, the committee had no direct dealings with Asante Berko the former Managing Director (MD) for Tema Oil Refinery(TOR) who is the subject of investigation by the US Securities and Exchange Commission for breaching the foreign corrupt practices act.

Mr Asante Berko is facing charges from the Securities and Exchange Commission of the United States of America for arranging bribe for a Turkish energy Company to wire the money to Ghana based intermediate where they paid the local officials.

A statement issued by the US authorities stated that “Berko helped the Ghana based intermediate pay more than USS 200,000 in bribes to various other government officials and personally paid more than USS 60,000 to members of the Ghanaian Parliament and other government officials.

” The statement said adding that Berko took deliberate measures to protect his employer for detecting the bribery scheme’.

Mutwakilu added that ” some monies have been collected we call on MPA to openly disclose how much was raise and how much consumers could be rebated in respect of the amount they have already collected, that amount cannot be used by MPA for any other thing. They should come out clearly to let us know how much they have raise from April 1st to April 16th.”

The Damango Member of Parliament indicated that the legal proceeding that have already commenced in the United State should be allowed to travel the full hall before Parliament went into the matter by a way of probe.
