I regret helping Afenyo Markins- Kofi Annan

Parliamentary candidate of the NDC in the Effutu constituency of the central region, Dr James Kofi Annan expresses regret for throwing his weight behind the candidacy of incumbent MP for Effutu Constituency Hon Alexander Afenyo Markins (lawyer) during the 2016 elections.

Dr Annan Said this when he appeared on Adekye Mu Nsem Programmme on Ahotor fm (92.3).

He noted that, Afenyo Markins is unfit to lead, and to be given the second chance as MP for failing to give the people fair representation, and also implement pro poor interventions to alleviates the harsh economic conditions by the constituents.

The man who seeks to unseat Hon Markins , noted that his one time close ally has disappointed him by going contrary to the commitment he made to help the people of Effutu, and its environs prior to his presence unto mainstream politics, and he has regretted spending huge sums of money to fund the campaigns by Hon Afenyo Markins throughout the years he have contested for the parliamentary seat, in the Effutu constituency over breach of trust.

Mr Kofi Annan, who has remained very bitter about Markins ” dishonest attitude “avowed that he decided to support the current MP throughout his parliamentary bids due to the love he has for the NPP, during that the periods he stayed with the ruling party, and as a card bearing member of good standing.

The NDC recently ‘whisked’ Mr Annan from the corridors of the New Patriotic Party, after the NPP gave a hint that the incumbent MP should be allowed to go unopposed ahead of the 2020 Polls. The decision by the functional executives to disallow Mr. Kofi Annan to file and contest the sitting Lawmaker, infuriated the philanthropist to merge with the NDC, to fight the NPP for the parliamentary seat.

Though some individuals within the NDC, have expressed reservations about the move, amidst several divergent opinions. Some similarly argue that roping in an ‘outsider’ ahead of  real party men, and this according to NDC faithfuls in the area, does not augur well for party cohesion. 

Meanwhile many stalwarts , and sympathizers have hailed the Mr. Annan and called on all to support a worthy course by working in unison to win the Effutu Constituency.

They describe Mr. Kofi Annan as a man who is enviably resourceful, and endowed with having the poor at heart.

They believe that, Dr. Kofi Annan is in the position to secure a seat which they once cherished and vowed never to lose it to their arch rival, the NPP.

Though sections of the constituents avow the Current MP ought to be given a third opportunity, to represent the people of Effutu in parliament, many have also decried the move and stated that, Hon. Markins’ performance is demotivating, and he does not deserve to be in the august House come 2021.

Dr Annan further took a swipe at the NPP for destroying the socio economic gains in the area, and posits that, he is the right candidate to unseat the NPP’s Afenyo Markins in the December elections

He said he has done so much in terms of providing development and initiating livelihoods empowerment programmes for the local people in Elmina and by far the Effutu Constituency.

Dr Annan was declared last week as the parliamentary candidate by the  constituency executives for the 2020 polls, awaiting confirmation by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NDC.
