The Executive Director of the Amnesty International Ghana, Mr. Robert Amoafo has warned against traditional authorities and other institutions who abuse the rights of others on grounds of tradition and cultures.
He noted that, any law that does not conform to the 1992 Constitution is null and void, and anyone who perpetuates such against fellow human, outside the Constitution must be brought before the law courts.
Reacting to the alleged police brutalities against residents of Sunyani for failing to wear black and red attire to signify the mourning of the late Queen Mother Nana Yaa, on Ahotor News, Mr. Amoafo said, by law, no one can force someone to eat or wear something against the person’s will, except in prison custody where the law makes room for some exemptions.
“Not everybody in a certain town is a native of that land so traditions and culture of that land are supposed not to be imposed on them” he said.
Robert Amoafo concluded by saying Kings and Queens can make laws but it should be in accordance of the law which governs the country which is the 1992 Constitution.
